About the Artist

Carole Lewis was born in Philadelphia, PA in 1964. Having grown up in a family of creatives it is not surprising she would learn a thing or two by the time she reached High School. In 12th grade she found a love for ceramic art. From there she would go on to Bucks County Community College into their Studio Arts program, studying fine art with an emphasis on ceramic art.

After college she found work as a visual designer working in retail, designing displays as well as interior shops within the stores. This creative pursuit would unknowingly prepare her for a career as an Interior Designer.

After starting a family in 1990 she found that she could work from home and pursue a creative outlet in the form of decorating residential interiors. Currently still consulting in this field, a need to get back to more personal pursuits has led to where she is today, working out of her home studio in Bucks County, PA creating works of collage, painting and assemblage art.

Artist Statement

I see objects that surround us in everyday life as art.

When I view an object I don’t just see the thing itself, but I see the design, the material, the color scheme, marketing strategy, audience, and consumer. Seeing things from that perspective enables me to see the potential in objects and raw materials from which my process for collage begins.

What draws me to works of collage is the way things fit like pieces in a puzzle. It can be complicated or simple, large or small, dimensional or flat. With the use of different materials such as paper, paint, clay, found objects of wood or metal, and with the right composition, the mess of materials that you began with now forms a complete picture.

When working in my studio going through my collections of papers and objects I can hear my interior designer self talking to me, paying attention to composition, detail, color, and scale. I draw upon the skills that interior design has afforded me for my artwork. Bringing deliberate works of art into our lives allows us to share our sense of beauty, creativity, and humor. In my case, I hope to tap on all of these elements through my work.

I hope you enjoy seeing the work as I do.  Perhaps it takes you to different places in your own life giving you a chance to reflect on how you too are creative and unique.
